The New Promaster 7500DX

We've been talking about getting a flash for the camera for some time now. So based on my buddy's recommendation, we purchased a Promaster 7500DX. From what we have seen so far, it's really nice. I really love the way it portrays soft light.The above shot was taken using the on board flash. It's not bad, but it's a little harsh and the dog obviously doesn't like it.
This it taken using the new flash. It's set at a 45 and only the main flash fired.
This is also take using the new flash set at 45, but both the main flash and the secondary flash fired.

White Balance

I've heard a lot about setting your own white balance using a "gray card". With a little bit of research I found that for digital cameras you want to use an 18% gray card and for film cameras you want to use 12% gray card. Looking online, these start around $20 and go up from there. So in an experiment I created a solid 18% gray picture and printed it on a 3x5 card and took the following series of photos.

This is the programed tungsten white balance.

This is the auto white balance.

This is the manual white balance using the homemade 3x5 card.

So I will do a little more experimenting with darker and lighter cards to see what they will do as well, but I think these photos speak for themselves. I will continue to use the card.

I am learning to soften photos in the digital darkroom. This particular shot (as with most of my shots) was very hard and crisp. This has been softened twice.
